A Monument to Peace: Our Hope for the Children

A Monument to Peace Statue by Avard T. Fairbanks

Avard T. Fairbanks’ career of major monument making started with war memorials, commemorating the sacrifice of American Soldiers in World War One.  His personal philosophies gravitated toward progress and peace.  In the later years of his career, he was able to create a heroic-size peace monument which was erected near the entrance of the International Peace Gardens of Jordan Park in the West Salt Lake Valley. 

This monument features the draped figure of a noble female figure representing Peace, holding the Globe of the World in one hand and a long-handled torch with the everlasting flame in the other.  In front on the side of this figure is a group of children; under is the inscription is “Hope for the Children.”  The monument stands on a foundation of rose quartz of which is the scene of the sun breaking through clouds, with the inscription, “The Dawn of a New Era.”  Although the project began in 1963, it was not erected until 1976 and was dedicated on Veteran’s Day of that year.  The acceptance speech was given by Salt Lake Mayor, Ted Wilson. 

This impressive monument serves as a representation of the universal desire for Peace throughout the world.  It also serves as a lasting tribute to Avard T. Fairbanks, and his philosophy for World Peace.  There are no working models for reproduction of this monument.
