This painting depicts the Birth of Venus, or Awakening of Aphrodite, in which a female figure is exposed fully nude as the shell opens. The Birth of Venus, according to mythology, occurred when two dolphins bore Venus in a Shell to the Isle of Cyprus, and when the shell opened, there was Aphrodite fully formed. This is an original oil painting by Grant R. Fairbanks, M.D. Color copies of this painting on canvas are available for purchase in the form of a giclée.
