Brigham Young - 1979
This larger-than-life portrait bust of Brigham Young was created by Avard T. Fairbanks, Ph.D., Sculptor, in 1979.
Brigham Young is well-known historically as both religious leader and colonizer of the West. He became President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon Church) following the assassination of Joseph Smith, Jr., in 1844. Despite many difficulties and hardships which the members (Saints) were forced to endure, he was able to successfully lead a migration of Mormon Pioneers to a new location in the Rocky Mountains which would be a safe haven (Zion) for the Saints (members of the Church).
He erected the Salt Lake Temple, the Tabernacle, and the Assembly Hall on Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City. He commissioned an archway over State Street at the entrance to his property in 1859 called the Eagle Gate, as the archway was topped with a wood carving of a stylized Eagle. He also established multiple cities, effectively colonizing the area which they originally called the State of Deseret.
Eventually, a reduced version of Deseret became the State of Utah, and not only was Brigham Young the President of the LDS Church in this area, but also served as Governor of the State of Utah.
