Eagle for the Eagle Gate, Salt Lake City
This colossal bird with a 20-foot wingspan and weighing 4000 pounds in bronze was created by Grant R. Fairbanks, M.D. when a medical student. He hired two of his brothers, Justin Fairbanks and David Fairbanks, to assist him. This stylized Eagle was patterned after the original wooden bird carved by Ralph Ramsey, commissioned by Brigham Young.
The original went up in 1859 and came down as a result of an accident in 1959. The larger replacement was dedicated in 1963. Bronze castings of the 5-foot working model can be made available for purchase.
