Flower Girl by Avard T. Fairbanks
This life-size statue represents a pre-adolescent female figure holding an Iris flower in her left hand and a wreath of flowers across her shoulders. It was sculpted from life in 1933 when, Avard T. Fairbanks was Professor of Sculptor at the University of Michigan. It is considered to be a companion piece to the Shell Boy; they are both of the same height, and both demonstrate the graceful S-curve, suggesting motion. Multiple castings were made before sculptor’s death, and one casting is on national display at the Brookgreen Gardens, National Sculpture Garden in South Carolina.
A postmortem life-size casting can be made available for purchase.
