Jesus Christ Colossal Head Statue
A colossal head of Jesus Christ was created by Avard T. Fairbanks while teaching sculpture at the University of Utah. Avard T. Fairbanks wished to make a colossal statue of Jesus Christ for Jerusalem. He created a colossal head, hopefully to promote a statue for that purpose. This depiction of Christ has a dramatic and compelling expression. The colossal head was loaned out, as was the sculptor’s habit to get more visibility of his work.
He had hoped to create a sculpture exhibit in the main hall of the Commerce Building in downtown Salt Lake. However, the colossal head of Jesus was on loan for too long a period, and without the sculptor’s knowledge, it was broken up with a hammer. The pieces were hauled off to the dump. Unfortunately, this can be the fate of great works of art if they are not protected. When Grant R. Fairbanks attempted to rescue this priceless work, it had already been destroyed.
The colossal head of Jesus can be remembered in photographs only. No reproductions of the colossal head of Jesus are available. The photograph is here for Avard T. Fairbanks gallery.
