Lincoln the Frontiersman - 1944
This statue, created by Avard T. Fairbanks, Ph.D., sculptor, in 1944. It depicts the youthful Lincoln astride fallen logs holding an axe. It was commissioned as part of a will from a teacher at the Ewa Sugar Company Plantation in Hawaii.
It was modeled to heroic size at the Avard Fairbanks Studio in Old University Hall on the University of Michigan Campus. Subsequently, it was cast in bronze and shipped to Hawaii. It was prominently erected on the Ewa Plantation, which is close to Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu. The axe in Lincoln’s hand is a period tool that was used to split rails for making fences.
A small working model of Lincoln the Frontiersman is available.
