Maxwell Wintrobe M.D. Bronze Statue - 1968
This is a portrait by Avard T. Fairbanks, Ph.D., Sculptor, made from life of Dr. Maxwell Wintrobe who can be considered the father of our current medical school. Prior to the arrival of Dr. Wintrobe, the University of Utah had a two-year medical school, and participants had to complete their training elsewhere. Under Dr. Wintrobe, he organized the medical school into a four-year school and sought out eminent faculty, changed the curriculum of the College of Medicine at the University of Utah, and made into a first-rate school.
Dr. Wintrobe himself was an eminent hematologist in the field of Internal Medicine and, in fact, wrote the definitive textbook on the subject. He needs to be remembered forever for his dedication and contribution to the field of medicine in the State of Utah. The bronze bust of Dr. Wintrobe was donated by Grant R. Fairbanks, M.D., and it currently resides in the Medical Library at the University of Utah.
