Old Oregon Trail Medallion

This was a re-minting in 2002 of Avard's medal from 1924.
 
This medal commemorates the 500,000 pioneers who trekked this route-- one of the largest migrations in history.  There are now twenty of the large plaques marking key places long the route. This image even found its way into a US postage stamp.
