Packard Automobile (2nd Proposed Ornament)

Packard Automobile (2nd Proposed Ornament)

$0.00Price

In addition to the three radiator ornaments which were reproduced for the Essex Terraplane, the Plymouth, and the Dodge automobiles, Avard T. Fairbanks also created two additional radiator ornament designs for a competition for the Packard automobile.

The Packard was a high-end luxury car at the time and was seeking to compete with Rolls Royce in Grace and Beauty.  This included creating a new radiator ornament to be equivalent to, or better than that of the Rolls Royce which had a winged, draped female leaning backward.

Two models were created by Avard T. Fairbanks, Ph.D., for the Packard, both winged female figures in Art Deco style, one leaning forward and the other leaning backward as in the Rolls Royce design.  As it turned out, the competition for the radiator ornament turned out to be simply a publicity event, and an in-house design was chosen with a figure reaching out holding onto a wheel.

Although the Avard Fairbanks models were not accepted, the models still exits and can be cast in bronze and chrome-plated and made available for purchase by historical auto enthusiasts.
