Reed O. Dingman Bronze Statue: Professor of Surgery - 1970
This handsome portrait bust was created by Avard T. Fairbanks, Ph.D., Sculptor, in his sculpture studio after his retirement from the University of Utah. Reed O. Dingman was a Professor of Surgery of the University of Michigan and Chief of the Section of Plastic Surgery, which he founded and led. His program was among the finest, if not the finest, in the Country.
The sculptor’s son, Grant R. Fairbanks, M.D., trained under Reed O. Dingman, and under his tutelage was given an assignment to serve on Hospital Ship Hope in Tunis, Tunisia as plastic surgeon on the ship for a two-month rotation. Reed O. Dingman and Sculptor, Avard T. Fairbanks, Ph.D., were the greatest heroes in the life of Grant R. Fairbanks, M.D. Dr. Dingman was indeed a sculptor of the human body. To him goes credit for Dr. Grant R. Fairbanks, M.D. learning his profession of plastic surgery.
