Saint Gregory - Cathedral, Phoenix AZ
Avard T. Fairbanks and his son Justin Fairbanks created the colossal 18 feet tall high-relief sculpture for front door display for the Saint Gregory Cathedral in Phoenix AZ.
Pope Gregory, The Great, who lived in the 6th Century, made many improvements in the Catholic Church, and is best known for the “Gregorian chants.”
The statue of Pope Gregory was created in 1955 as a colossal high-relief vertical sculpture to grace the front of the St. Gregory Cathedral in Phoenix, Arizona, which was completed in 1957. A plaster casting of the colossal head of Pope Gregory remains in the Fairbanks art collection and can be cast in bronze. The working model high-relief of Pope Gregory, The Great, is in existence and can be cast in bronze or cast in stone.
The figure is holding scrolls containing the Gregorian Chants with papal crosses on the gloves and also on the escutcheon supporting his feet. The papal mitre, significant to the time, differs from that of today.
This colossal artwork is not reproducible, therefore it is not for sale. We are showing this U.S. historical artwork of Avard T. Fairbanks as a gallery exbibit.
