The Flying Dutchman

The Flying Dutchman

$0.00Price

This is an original oil painting by Grant R. Fairbanks, M.D., depicting the artist’s interpretation of the phantom ship from the deck of another ship.  Whether truth or mythology, the story is that of the fate of a Dutch Captain named Hendrik VanDer Decken of the Dutch East India Company who insisted on proceeding in the worst of the stormy waters around the tip of Africa, Cape of Good Hope.  The ship, its master, and its crew all vanished, and no trace was ever found.  The captain had claimed that God could not stop him.

Because he defamed the Lord in his determination to reach the Dutch East Indies, he and his crew became cursed and were destined to spend eternity sailing the seas.

As this 17th Century Dutch sailing ship with blood-red sails would show up periodically to be seen by other ships, and even to people on the beach, the story gained credibility.  No reasonable explanation has ever been made as to any of the sightings of The Flying Dutchman.

However, as with UFOs, there have been credible people who have documented its sighting.
