"The Mighty" EP2 (bi-polar) Electric Locomotive in Mountain Pass
The mighty EP2 bipolar electric locomotive was the most powerful electric locomotive manufactured in the United States. The oil painting representation by Grant R. Fairbanks, M.D. was inspired by an illustration in a 1927 magazine showing the might of electrical power. Only five such locomotives were produced, and these were for the Milwaukee line which ran between Milwaukee and San Francisco through the mountain passes of Montana. The distinctive features of this locomotive were reproduced in a wide variety of model engines by the model train industry manufacturing companies.
This included Ives, Lionel, American Flyer, and Dorfan. The immense power of this unique locomotive is demonstrated in the painting as it pulls a mile-long train of cars through a tunnel and mountain passes in an evening remote mountain snow scene.

Artwork Medium = Giclée Art Prints
- Copies of the original artworks are available for purchase as Giclees – a color copy on canvas. Although a Giclee lacks the surface texture of the original oil painting, when framed, and on the wall, it will appear to be identical. High-quality reproductions of museum-quality will last almost indefinitely without significant fading.
- Original oil paintings may be obtained by commission from the artist; however, due to time and effort required, they come at a significantly higher cost than the Giclee.
