Botteicelli's Venus
“Venus on a Shell” after Botticelli’s Venus
This is a large copy by Grant R. Fairbanks, M.D. after the theme of Sandro Botticelli painted circa 1845, in which Venus is shown being blown to the shoreline of the Isle of Cyprus on an open clamshell. According to Greek Mythology, after the clamshell was delivered by two dolphins to the shores of the Isle of Cyprus, the clamshell opened, and Venus appeared in her birth as an adult nude female figure.
Although a similar pose to Botticelli’s Venus, the artist has taken the liberty to give this Venus a smile and take her right hand off her right breast, as in the original painting she is partially draped by her long hair.
Color copies of this mythical painting on canvas are available for purchase in the form of a giclée.
Artwork Medium = Giclée Art Prints
- Copies of the original artworks are available for purchase as Giclees – a color copy on canvas. Although a Giclee lacks the surface texture of the original oil painting, when framed, and on the wall, it will appear to be identical. High-quality reproductions of museum-quality will last almost indefinitely without significant fading.
- Original oil paintings may be obtained by commission from the artist; however, due to time and effort required, they come at a significantly higher cost than the Giclee.
