Venus on the Wave (Venere Sullonda)

This is a colored ceramic statuette which depicts Venus, the Goddess of Love and Beauty, riding an ocean wave.  According to Ancient mythology, she was born of the sea – usually depicted in the shell of a giant mollusk.  In this small sculpture, the shell has been omitted.  A single one-third of life-size of this statue was carved in Italian marble.
