Winged Horse (Pegasus) for MSU
Dr Grant R. Fairbanks, MD, sculpted a winged Pegasus statue in 2005-2006. This statue was created for the Pegasus Critical Care Unit for Large Animals of the Veterinary College, Michigan State University in East Lansing.
The director, Dr. Derkson, asked Dr. Fairbanks if there were any Pegasus statues by his father, Avard T. Fairbanks, other than his Colt Pegasus at Meadowbrook Hall. He was able to recover a statue armature of a horse leaping into the air. Some clay had been applied, but the statue was never completed.
Dr. Fairbanks surmised that this could only have been intended to represent the mythical horse Pegasus. Using a live quarter horse for a model, he sculpted a Pegasus, adding wings and a cloud in his father’s style. It was cast in bronze and dedicated on site in East Lansing in 2007.
The concept of this statue was that of Avard T. Fairbanks; however, the sculptured work was done by his son, Grant R. Fairbanks, M.D. The statue is central to a garden patio adjacent to the Critical Care Unit for Large Animals. It lends itself well to the garden setting.
A bronze casting of this statue can be made available for purchase.
