World War I Victorious American Soldier (Dough Boy)

World War I Victorious American Soldier (Dough Boy)

There were two working models for the Dough Boy monument dated 1919.  The smaller of the two was created first.  The Dough Boy is an accurate representation of the World War I American Soldier holding a Springfield bolt-action rifle in his right hand, a gas mask on his chest, a long bayonet, canteen, knapsack, puttees, and holding in his left hand two 1917 German steel helmets (“stahlhelm”) as trophies.

He represents one of the early major monuments by Avard T. Fairbanks.  Two 9-foot statues (heroic-size) are in Idaho – one in Saint Anthony, Idaho, and the other in Moscow, Idaho.  A photo of the smaller working model was printed in the World Book Encyclopedia of 1928.  Postmortem bronze castings of either size Dough Boy can be made available for purchase.
